Introduction of members
: Carol Campbell, EPA, Pete Davenport, Hydro-Geologist, Gary Nelson, Dave Suhr’s replacement, Jim Heron-Bruce Stover’s replacement.

Commodore Update (Bruce Stover)-Site showing on Sept 19, had seven firms looking at it. They will recon. flume and will put in sewer pipe. Bids will open on 10/17. Hope to have it done by Dec. 31. There will be a phase 2 to re-line the pipe. Money is coming from the Office of Surface Mines. The money is raised from tax on coal sold in the state. Bruce said they would come up with the flume to put in there. Glen will contact Steve Baer, And Division of Water Resources.

Donation to Mining Museum- USGS was doing filtering in August and using the museum. Glen suggested the WCRC make a donation to show appreciation for the use of it. Motion to donate $100 made by Larry Bussey Second made by Phil Bethke, Motion Carried.

May High Flow Data, Quick Overview- Flow is up in East Willow, Zinc levels were almost half of prior study. Dilution doesn’t seem to make since. West Willow levels are still high. First glance says that with higher water the concentrations were not worse. The conclusion would be that if during high flow there is a dilution, your water is coming from other sources. Flow sources are different during low flow than high flow. Low flow study was done after a high water year and high flow study was done after a drought. However, results were consistent enough to call it a high flow. Don’t need to do another synoptic characterization to determine ? Studies would indicate that during episodic events there is a lot of flow off of the tailings. When data is collected we can talk about how to proceed with the report. We should include data on the observations of the two labs.

Airport Corner Update- On Sept 17 Army Corps of Engineers brought in the XRF machine. A map was available that showed that. The area is identified as being contaminated. The XRF Machine only indicates lead, so samples taken will be used to return other concentration levels. Once the report comes back, they will need to talk with CDPHE and property owners in order to come up with the best way to provide a fix that would insure safety of residents. At this point they will determine the intended use and then work on a way to implement the fix. The lab has 30 samples for verification and 3 samples that need to have TCLP. The cost will be $1900. Additional samples will be between $200-$300. Motion to spend up to $2500was made by JB Alexander and Seconded by Phil Bethke. Motion carried. If results come back prior to next meeting, they can move ahead without coming to committee.

Underground Recon- Fresh water was found in the Solomon could easily cut the amount of flow that needs to be treated. Could we go from 20 gallons a minute to 5? It would be easier to treat what is coming out, which would make the passive filter a possibility. Not much moving in the Commodore, some water coming out of rib at maybe 3-4 gallons per minute. All of the water that is running is going into a hole in the ground. Going from Commodore to lower levels is maybe 5-10 gallons a minute. Since September the water has dropped about 15 ft. but we still have 500 gallons a minute coming out of the Nelson.

Phase one is the recon of underground sampling. Mine Safety people will be looking at the mine and Jim Heron will go through to be sure it is ready and safe for their workers. From this we can develop the approach, equipment and testing supplies needed.

Phase 2 would be to execute this written plan.

This will finish up the plan to do water characterization.

Memorandum of agreement between CDMG- Phase One requires $8600. This needs to be approved by committee. Motion made by Chuck Barnes and seconded Phil Bethke. Discussion. Motion Carried. There has to be written permission from landowners before the work can begin. Zeke will contact Poxons. 319 money can be used to purchase to purchase enough equipment to outfit 3 people and 1 oxygen meter. Motion to approve $3,000 made by JB Alexander and seconded by Phil Bethke.

Section 319 Grant Report- September 19, 2000 Zeke and Glen traveled to Denver to make a presentation to the grant committee. Kathleen said they were recommended for funding.
